Novel Room-Temperature Catalyst

Dr.Filter’s technology is a non-toxic catalyst that targets and kills COVID-19, as well as other viruses and emerging pathogens. ThruPore’s core technology gives Dr.Filter its porous structure for high airflow and allows the non-toxic minerals in Dr. Filter to catalytically break down viruses at room temperature.

Dr. Filter is a service treatment that we apply to your existing air filters and requires no modifications to your existing HVAC system. We typically apply the treatment in our facility.

For more information, continue to review the science and data below behind Dr. Filter.

Science & Data

Thanks to R&D funding from the National Science Foundation, ThruPore Technologies has developed a new catalyst that captures and kills viruses and bacteria, using EPA-approved SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus testing.

The catalyst is then added to a safe liquid formulation (ethanol and water) for the Dr. Filter spray-on air filter treatment.

Viral testing was performed at ThruPore’s laboratory. Building Tests were performed in a 24,000 sq. ft. empty office building.

Dr. Filter’s active ingredient – Zinc Oxide – is considered inert by the EPA and generally safe FDA

The EPA has put zinc oxide on its “inert” ingredients list:
Visit the EPA’s inert ingredients list.

The FDA has categorized this substance to be highly safe, even for human consumption: Visit the FDA’s page for the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21

Our data, filed with the EPA, supports the claim that we kill 99.99% of viruses & bacteria.

  • Testing was performed at ThruPore’s Lab in Birmingham, AL under the direction of Dr. Joseph Brown, a microbiologist at UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • Our experiments were performed using EPA-approved SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus testing and EPA testing protocol 1602.
  • Images highlight experimental data. Top image shows a reference with no treatment, yielding many viral plaques. Bottom image shows a Dr. Filter treated material resulting in 99.99% fewer viral plaques.

Dr. Filter was granted access to an empty 24,000 square foot office building managed by NAI Emory Hill in December 2020 to perform safety and airflow testing.

  • Volatile Organic Compounds. Used a DirectSense IAQ probe for data acquisition. The Dr. Filter team tested untreated filters, then treated filters.
The team measured TVOC of 23 ppb (parts per billion) for untreated and 12 ppb for treated filters.
Max. Limits are 750 ppb for OSHA and 44 ppb for CA.
  • Particulates. EPA Testing Protocol 2012, PM2.5 (particles ≤ 2.5µm)
Used a PC-3500 Handheld Particle Meter for data acquisition. The Dr. Filter team tested untreated, then treated filters.
The team measured 3.5 µg/m^3 for untreated and 2.6 µg/m^3 for treated filters.
Max. Limits are 35 µg/m^3 for EPA.
  • Air Flow Variability.
The Dr. Filter team used a Gray Wolf AS-202 airspeed probe for data acquisition. The team took 10 airflow readings on 3 days in the same locations for treated and untreated filter time periods. There was no measurable difference in readings.
